Dear Ricky…

Monday, October 24th, 2005

A marine stationed in Afghanistan recently received a Dear John letter from his girlfriend back home. It reads as follows:

Dear Ricky,

I can no longer continue our relationship. The distance between us is just too great. I must admit that I have cheated on you twice since you’ve been gone, and it’s not fair to either of us. I’m sorry. Please return the picture of me that I sent to you.

Love, Becky

The Marine, with hurt feelings, asked his fellow Marines for any snapshots they could spare of their girlfriends, sisters, ex-girlfriends, aunts, cousins etc… In addition to the pictures of Becky, Ricky included all the other pictures of the pretty girls he had collected from his buddies. There were 57 photos in that envelope… along with this note:

Dear Becky,

I’m sorry, but I can’t quite remember who the hell you are. Please take your picture from the pile, and send the rest back to me…

Take care, Ricky

Now that’s a smart “smarting” man right there for ya! (All the pun in the world intended) =)

“Objectivity is Subjective”

Friday, October 14th, 2005

Was talking to a close friend today during class and this came up… Odd-sounding, yeah… But I really think it makes sense… In an ALMOST senseless way… Haha… Hear me out…

What constitutes being objective anyways? Just a commitment to base ones opinions on facts rather than on personal feelings alone? By being impartial? By being impersonal in judgement? By being “real” or independent of personal bias and existence? By possessing the quality of being unbiased or without prejudice?

I don’t think objectivity is possible… We are, after all, human… How is it remotely possible that we detach ourselves from the very thing that makes us human? The very essence of our humanity - our feelings, our senses, our emotions, our sentiments, our past, our experiences… What we’ve been through and what we’ve seen and done makes us the person we are today… Everything - the good, the bad, and the ugly… Every adventure, encounter, event, incident and occurance… Every ordeal, trial and tribulation… Like it or not, it makes us that much more unique and special in our own way… As such, we deal with things with that personal touch that comes from having lived life…

So… This brings me to objectivity being subjective… Our experiences, our encounters and our past shape our understanding of the world… The way we see things is influenced by our perception, acuity and perspicacity… There is no running away from it… Whether one has the ability to discern it or not, we all see things through our individual lenses of experience… If so, how is it possible that one be entirely objective in any situation… It’s not possible… What we’ve been through will undoubtedly affect our decisions, viewpoints, beliefs and values… Come on, let’s get real… I admit that I sometimes do it even when I try to be completely objective… There’s no escaping the human bit in each of us… No point killing yourself trying to… Give it up, let it go, and enjoy the ride…

I don’t think I’m personally THAT biased, narrow-minded, unfair, chauvinist or prejudiced a person… I’d like to think I’m not anyways… Heh heh… =p I can be objective when I want to - so I think, and so some people say… But of course, it’s objectivity from MY point of view… I guess what I’m trying to say is that we all have our own distinctive brand of objectivity… Subjective objectivity… I love it… =)

When I See You Smile

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Artist: Bad English
Song Title: When I See You Smile

Sometimes I wonder
How I’d ever make it through,
Through this world without having you
I just wouldn’t have a clue

‘Cause sometimes it seems
Like this world’s closing in on me,
And there’s no way of breaking free
And then I see you reach for me

Sometimes I wanna give up
I wanna give in
I wanna quit the fight
And then I see you, baby
And everything’s alright
Everything’s alright

Chorus:
When I see you smile
I can face the world, oh oh
You know I can do anything
When I see you smile
I see a ray of light, oh oh
I see it shining right through the rain
When I see you smile
Oh yeah, baby when I see you smile at me

Baby, there’s nothing in this world
That could ever do
What a touch of your hand can do
It’s like nothing that I ever knew

And… And when the rain is falling
I don’t feel it ’cause you’re here with me now
And one look at you, baby
Is all I’ll ever need
It’s all I’ll ever need

Chorus:
When I see you smile
I can face the world, oh oh
You know I can do anything
When I see you smile
I see a ray of light, oh oh
I see it shining right through the rain
When I see you smile, baby
Baby when I see you smile at me

Sometimes I wanna give up
I wanna give in
I wanna quit the fight
Then one look at you, baby
And everything’s alright,
Everything’s alright

So right…

(Instrumental break)

When I see you smile
I can face the world, oh oh
You know I can do anything
When I see you smile
I see a ray of light, oh oh
I see it shining right through the rain, yeah

When I see you smile
Yeah, I can face the world, oh oh
You know I can do anything

When I see you smile, oh yeah
Baby when I see you smile

Smile at me

=)

The Rose

The Rose
————–

It’s amazing how a single rose can make all the difference,
Somehow I just felt it there and then, I felt it in an instance.
What’s an entire bouquet when all that’s needed is but one alone?
My face lighted up and became uncontrollably smile-prone.

How these things happen or why they take place, I’ll never understand,
All I know is through any time, I’ll need none other but your hand.
All through this life, to guide me, lead me and walk with me,
Thanks for always being there… and for you, I’ll be there, you’ll see.

Secret Garden

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Artist: Bruce Springsteen
Song Title: Secret Garden (From Jerry MaGuire Soundtrack)

- Dorothy -
I was just about to tell you… That I love him… I do… I love him… I love him… And I don’t care what you think… I love him for the man he wants to be and I love him for the man that he almost is… I love him, Laurel… I love him… I love him!

She’ll let you in her house
If you come knockin’ late at night
She’ll let you in her mouth
If the words you say are right
If you pay the price
She’ll let you deep inside
But there’s a secret garden she hides

- Man -
You gotta be fair to her… She loves you… If you don’t love her, you’ve gotta tell her…

She’ll let you in her car
To go drivin’ round
She’ll let you into the parts of herself
That’ll bring you down
She’ll let you in her heart
If you gotta hammer and vise
But into her secret garden, don’t think twice

- Jerry -
What if we got married? If I said that, would you stay?

- Dorothy -
No no… Don’t do that… Don’t say that unless…

You’ve gone a million miles

- Dorothy -
Well, you could say it if you want to…

How far’d you get

- Jerry -
Will you marry me?

To that place where you can’t remember

- Jerry -
What’d you think?

And you can’t forget

- Dorothy -
Laurel!?! We’re getting married!

She’ll lead you down a path
There’ll be tenderness in the air
She’ll let you come just far enough
So you know she’s really there
And she’ll look at you and smile
And her eyes will say
She’s got a secret garden
Where everything you want
Where everything you need
Will always stay
A million miles away

- Preacher -
Do you Jerry MaGuire take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? And do you, Dorothy Boid take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband… I now pronounce you husband and wife…

- Dorothy -
I pretended that proposal by the car was real… And it might have just been a hypothetical… I did this… And at least I can do something about it now…

- Jerry -
So this break is “break-up”… That’s…

- Dorothy -
Come on Jerry… You know this isn’t easy for me…

- Jerry -
Okay, okay… This is where is has to happen, then this is where it has to happen… I’m not letting you get rid of me… How bout that? I miss my wife… I love you… You - complete me… How bout I just…

- Dorothy -
Shut up… Just shut up… You had me at “hello”… You had me at “hello”…

A friend far far away suddenly said a line from this movie earlier today… Coincidently, I’ve been lullaby-ing myself with this song for a bit now, and I just felt like putting it up here… I got this song as a gift a couple of days ago… Didn’t really get into the movie when it was the craze back when it was released… But this song? It’s heart-breaking, yet heart-warming at the same time… I love it… It’s just one of those songs, you know? One of those that somehow manage to capture love in all it’s glory - not only the ups and the downs, but also the ups that make all the downs in the world worthwhile… That’s what love truly is… Yeah… That’s love… =)

Wake Me Up When September Ends

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Artist: Green Day
Song Title: Wake Me Up When September Ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Twenty years have gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

Hmmm… I never realised that this song was chorus-less and so repetitive! Interesting, nevertheless… =)

If You Needed Somebody

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Artist: Bad Company
Song Title: If You Needed Somebody

Should have told you by now
But I can’t find the words, oh no
If I could show you somehow
But I don’t have the nerve, oh yeah

You don’t see me looking at you
How could love be so blind
Somehow you don’t notice me
Sooner or later, there will come a time, baby

Chorus:
If you needed somebody, like the way that I need you
If you wanted somebody, like the way that I want you

Oh yeah, the way that I wan’t you

If I could hold you tonight
It would last me forever
But the time’s never right
When will we be together, oh no

If I could make you understand
What you’re doing to me
Maybe there would come a time
When sooner or later, I will make you see, baby

Chorus:
If you needed somebody, like the way that I need you
If you wanted somebody, like the way that I want you

Ooh, if I could tell you now
The way you make me feel
Ooh, if I could show you somehow
Don’t you know my lovin’s, love so real

Chorus:
If you needed somebody, like the way that I need you
If you wanted somebody, like the way that I want you

(If you needed somebody) I need you, I wan’t you, I gotta tell you
The way that I need you
And if you wanted somebody, the way that I want you…

Why is it that rockers tend to write more meaningful love songs? Somehow, when boybands or pop stars sing their stuff, it ends up sounding corny and sickeningly sweet… Ugh… I really wouldn’t mind more songs such as this one in the market… Keep the good stuff comin!

You and Me

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

Artist: Lifehouse
Song Title: You and Me

What day is it
And in what month
This clock never seemed so alive
I can’t keep up and I can’t back down
I’ve been losing so much time

Cause it’s you and me and all of the people
Nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it’s you and me and all of the people and
I don’t know why I can’t keep my eyes off of you

All of the things that I want to say
Just aren’t coming out right
I’m tripping on words, you got my head spinning
I don’t know where to go from here

Cause it’s you and me and all of the people
With nothing to do, nothing to prove
And it’s you and me and all of the people and
I don’t know why I can’t keep my eyes off you

Something about you now
I can’t quite figure out
Everything she does is beautiful
Everything she does is right

Cause it’s you and me and all of the people
With nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it’s you and me and all of the people and
I don’t know why I can’t keep my eyes off of

You and me and all of the people
With nothing to do nothin to prove and
It’s you and me and all of the people and
I don’t know why I can’t keep my eyes off of you

What day is it
And in what month
This clock never seemed so alive

God Bless The Broken Road

Saturday, October 1st, 2005

Artist: Rascal Flatts
Song Title: Bless The Broken Road

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Other who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I’d like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smiled and take my hand
You’ve been there you understand
It’s all part of a grander plan that is coming true

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Other who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you

God has blessed me in so many ways… More ways than I can count… =)
